Obituary

Susan Dianne Smith, age 67, of Pine Bluff, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 3, 2021.

Born April 16, 1954 at Camden, she was the daughter of Pauline Ables Smith of Pine Bluff and the late Bobby Gene Smith. Her family moved to Pine Bluff in 1957, and she graduated from Watson Chapel High School in 1972.

Susan continued her education at Ouachita Baptist University, where she earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1976. She also earned two Master’s degrees: a Master of Early Childhood Education in 1979 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth and a Master of Education from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Early in her career, she worked as activities director at Pine Bluff Nursing Home and later at the Arkansas Heart Association.

Susan began teaching school at New Life Christian School in 1986. She served as principal until 2005, when the school merged with Ridgway Christian School. From then until 2018, she taught K-5. In 2019, she joined the Dollarway School District as a pre-K teacher at James Matthews Elementary School, where she was serving at the time of her death.

A dedicated Christian, Susan had been a member through the years of New Life Church and Pursuit Church (formerly Centennial Fellowship Church.)

A good friend, Dorcas VanGilst, said Susan left a lasting impact on the thousands of students and their parents whose lives she touched as a teacher, principal, spiritual mentor and friend.

“She stayed available to them as they moved into adulthood and had children of their own. Her experience with children, knowledge of the Word of God, love and wisdom were a priceless gift she gave although she never saw herself as the role model she was.”

In addition to her mother, survivors include her brother, David Smith (Linda) of Maumelle; a nephew, Joshua Smith (Taylor) of Cabot; and her great-nephew, Colton James Smith.

The funeral service will be held Monday, June 7, 2021, 10:00 a.m. at Pursuit Church, 1400 Centennial Lane in White Hall with Brother James Rushing and Brother Brad Rountree officiating. Interment will follow in Cypress Memorial Gardens by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services.

Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Cherry Street.

I would like to offer my condolences to the family of Ms. Susan Smith, I came to know her at the James Matthews Elementary School, she was the teacher to my Great-Nephew - she always had a smile on her face and a kind word. Even after my great nephew moved from the district after Pre-K she still asked about him and wanted to know how he was doing. A soul that will be very much missed from the education of our children. May God Bless You All and provide you Peace and Comfort during this time.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ms. Smith was my daughter, Chelsea's kindergarten teacher at Ridgway. She was a special person and we will miss her smile and kindness. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Susan and I had such great times together teaching, attending events, and shopping just to name a few. She was a dear friend and I will miss her. My prayers are with her family who she loved greatly. She was so proud of her nephew and his sweet family. I will see her again one day.
