Mike Whitener age 87 of Pine Bluff, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 20, 2022.
Born Samuel M. Whitener on July 1, 1934 in Carthage (Dallas County), AR, he was the son of the late Samuel Mae and Elnora Crowder Whitener. He moved to Little Rock, AR at an early age and graduated from Little Rock High School in 1952.
Mike initially worked for the Rock Island Railroad. He moved to Pine Bluff in 1959 where he worked for the Cotton Belt, Southern Pacific, and the Union Pacific railroads before retiring in 1996 after forty years of service.
He loved hunting, fishing, and wood working and enjoyed making projects for the home and giving to his friends. He was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Julia Ann Bolt Whitener; four sons, Samuel M. Whitener, Jr. (Renee) of Kingwood, TX, Mark A. Whitener of Clifton, NJ, Matthew E. Whitener (Penny) of White Hall, and William “Bill” M. Whitener (Penny) of Joshua, TX; one grandson, Bryan Whitener; four granddaughters, April Ockerman (Jason), Hannah Baugh (Justin), Megan Whitener, and Morgan Whitener; and three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Bella Ockerman, and Jaxson Baugh.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 26, 2022, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Fuller Hale-South Funeral Chapel. The service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Brother Mike Powell and Brother Myron “Bud” Calhoun officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
