Obituary for Homer Benson "Herkey" Capel

Homer Benson “Herkey” Capel was born on February 11, 1943, in Pine Bluff to Homer Bunyan “Doc” and Addie Beth Benson Capel. He was a graduate of Pine Bluff High School, where he played football.  After graduation, he attended college at the University of Arkansas, Monticello.  During his early career, he worked for International Paper and Central Moloney.  After a time there, he left to form his own business, Capel Construction Company.  After his retirement, he worked for approximately 5 years for the Arkansas Department of Corrections.

Herkey was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Providence Missionary Baptist Church.  He loved horseback riding, or a good round of golf, and was an instrument rated pilot, and enjoyed flying his friends and family various places.

Herkey passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2022, at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John Bunyan “Bunny” Capel; and two grandsons, Ethan Cole Traugott and Morgan Tyler Capel.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Judy Ann Blocker Capel; his son, Aaron Caldwell Capel and wife, Kimberly; his daughters, Leah Beth Capel, Traci Lyn Shumaker, and Tiffini Leah Traugott; his grandchildren, Sydney Abercrombie and spouse, Eric, Haylee Lyn Moyers, Mitchell O’Callaghan; and a great-granddaughter, Lydia Rose Cantrell.

A family-directed memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Providence Missionary Baptist Church.
