Obituary

Betty Nell Spakes, age 78, of Memphis, died Thursday, February 13, 2019.

Born September 26, 1941 at Rison, she was the daughter of Mrs. Martha McClain Spakes of Memphis and the late Wayne Spakes. She was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and attended Arkansas A&M College (now the University of Arkansas at Monticello).

A resident of Memphis since 1960, Ms. Spakes worked for many years at Fraenkel Wholesale Furniture Company prior to her retirement as Fraenkel’s Merchandise Manager. She then worked for several years for Rowsey Furniture Company.

She was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James W. McClain of Rison.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two brothers, Ron Spakes (Pat) and Steve Spakes; two aunts, Jo Fern Small and Gala McClain; numerous cousins; and her best friend of 50 years, Alma Raines.


Funeral services will be Monday, February 17, 2020, 12:00 noon in Union United Methodist Church at Rye, AR with Rev. Boyd Savage officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services of Pine Bluff.

Visitation will precede the service beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Betty was a special friend when we worked at Fraenkel. When we were both in the buying department we traveled many miles together. We had so much fun and shared so many laughs.
